Xim’s Lifelight technology extracts clinical vital signs (pulse, blood oxygen, blood pressure, respiration rate) from simple video feeds (from standard webcams).
The solution is based on combining established state-of-the art machine vision (specifically Remote Photoplethysmography), signal processing and machine learning. It has been trialled at a number of the UK’s largest teaching hospitals, resulting in possibly the largest dataset of its type – one million heartbeats – for supporting machine learning. Currently registered as a Class I medical device, xim is currently in the process of securing CE marking for Lifelight as a Class IIb medical device.
At the heart of the intellectual part of the company is the use of signal processing and statistical analysis techniques to derive physiological information about the user.
Having recently secured significant further funding, xim is now looking to enhance and refine the algorithms at the heart of the solution that deduce clear vital signs from a complex video signal.
To help us we are looking for a Physiological Scientist who can help us further uncover the physiological data within the data signal that we get from the camera.
About the role
The algorithms that underpin Lifelight are constantly being refined as a result of clinical findings, scientific advances and machine learning insights.
We are looking for a Physiological Scientist who can work with the Chief Scientist to run the scientific aspect of xim’s activity. This includes the identification and modelling of physiological properties derived from the data signal as well as organising and managing the processes that underpin and record the scientific progress of the company.
Xim uses Python for its algorithmic development and for the final implementation of the code in the medical device.
Reporting to the Chief Scientist, the role includes supporting the science team (consisting of the chief scientist, physiological experts, algorithm modellers and data scientists) as they work to uncover physiological data in the data stream, extract this through the use of appropriate algorithms, test models against real and ‘synthetic’ subjects, and ultimately implement this in a medical device. Specifically, you will have two main roles:
Theoretical Science, incorporating:
- Understanding and further developing the physiological science behind the algorithms used in xim’s solutions
- Understanding and further developing the characteristics of the data stream that correspond with vital signs, other physiological measurements, and information about the data stream itself (such as its stability, noise content)
- Understanding and further developing the signal processing and other techniques used to extract this information from the data stream
- Understanding and further developing the statistical analysis of the accuracy of the algorithms derived
- Keeping abreast of and researching the scientific literature relevant to our physiological and signal processing activities
- Modelling and refining new algorithms and approaches using the appropriate tools (Python, R, Matlab, Excel)
Data gathering and model testing, incorporating:
- Creating a process for – and then managing – the collection, storage and use of high quality ‘test’ data to support the development of xim’s algorithms from all sources: synthetic, from staff and healthy volunteers, and from patients within clinical studies ensuring that all data governance requirements are met
- Maintaining records to ensure that all aspects of scientific analysis and discovery are comprehensively documented, specifically supporting (and further developing) the xim Quality Management System in this area
- Expertise in physiology, signal processing, mathematical and programmatic modelling
- A relevant degree to BSc or MSc level (or above) in a relevant subject
- Experience of managing scientific activities and processes in either a commercial or research / academic environment
- Experience of working with and developing certified medical devices
